CJJ SUBMITS COMMENTS TO DOJ ON PROPOSED PREA STANDARDS

On May 10, 2010, CJJ submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Justice in response to a notice of proposed national standards to prevent and respond to sexual abuse in the criminal and juvenile justice systems, as recommended by the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission. The CJJ comments were informed by members of the CJJ Government Relations Committee and approved by a majority of CJJ Board Members. The CJJ comments do not expressly support the standards as drafted, but offer some suggestions based on CJJ members’ experience with the JJDPA.

CJJ’s comments are by no means the end of our involvement with the PREA standards, but the beginning. CJJ anticipates changes and revisions to the standards before final adoption, as well as an implementation period. CJJ will continue to draw upon the expertise and unique positions of SAGs and JJDPA state staff every step of the way to ensure that we, where necessary and beneficial, are active and relevant during the remaining discussion and implementation periods.
