CALL TO ACTION: July 7 is National Juvenile Justice Call-in Day!

On July 7, 2010, CJJ will join more than 50 members of the Washington, D.C.-based National Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Coalition in holding a national call-in day to push Congress to pass a comprehensive juvenile justice agenda. With the help of its members and allies, CJJ aims to help generate thousands of calls from people across the nation to ask Members of Congress to make juvenile justice a priority in the 111th Congress by:
  • Reauthorizing the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA);
  • Restoring and increasing federal juvenile justice appropriations; and
  • Passing the Youth PROMISE Act.
The JJDPA is three years overdue for reauthorization. The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved S. 678, but it must be considered by the full Senate before it can become law. Legislation has yet to be introduced in the House. With less than 100 days on the working calendar, it is imperative that juvenile justice advocates do what they can to move Congress to pass the JJDPA this year. To learn more, go to www.act4jj.org.

Federal juvenile justice appropriations have declined across the board by more than 50% since 2002. Even in tight economic times, modest federal investments in state juvenile justice reform efforts are critical to keeping court-involved youth safe, establishing proven effective practices and improving community safety. The Youth PROMISE Act is informed by more than thirty years of research and more than fifty criminal and juvenile justice experts about what works and what does not work to keep or move youth away from criminal gang activity. The Youth PROMISE Act honors local needs and resources, and, by focusing on the front-end, is a nice complement to community-based law enforcement efforts. CJJ is developing talking points for its members and allies to use when making these important calls. Please stay tuned, and do not hesitate to contact CJJ if you have ideas.

Thanks in advance for reminding Congress that voters care about juvenile justice!
