Advocates Launch National Website in Support of the Youth PROMISE Act

On May 26, 2010, the Student Peace Alliance, in partnership with advocates from across the nation, launched a new website in support of the Youth PROMISE Act. Via the website, www.youthpromiseaction.org, supporters and newcomers can learn more about the Act, and sign-on to be a “citizen co-sponsor” of the legislation. Since the May 26 launch, more than 11,000 people have become citizen co-sponsors.

Among a number of educational and advocacy tools, the website also features a 90-second “viral video” starring a number of entertainment, sports and political celebrities – including Actress Robin Wright, Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker and NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown – all explaining why they support passage of the Youth PROMISE Act. The video can also be viewed on YouTube. Just search “Youth PROMISE.”

The House version of the Youth PROMISE Act, H.R. 1064, is originally sponsored by U.S. Representatives Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA) and Michael Castle (R-DE), has 233 co-sponsors. The Senate cross-file, S. 435, is originally sponsored by U.S. Senators Robert “Bob” Casey (D-PA) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and has 13 co-sponsors. The House version was approved by the House Judiciary Committee on December 2, 2009. The bill now awaits consideration by two other House Committees before moving to the floor.
